Yuri Leving’s essay surveys a genre of self-portrait in the history of European art as precursor for the modern phenomenon of the selfie. The author demonstrates that classical and digital arts are closely intertwined as the means of visual communication, and shows how contemporary social media and advertising can manipulate the users’ perception through photography and cinema, in both professional and amateur realms.
